What's your why - What makes you different?

One of the questions I always ask clients at the start of a branding project is, "Why did you start your business?"

It's a simple question, but it's surprising how often people struggle to answer it. It's not because they don't know, but because they're so used to talking about what they do that they've forgotten to talk about why it matters.

Most business owners can explain their services, their process and their experience. They can tell you what they sell and who they sell it to but when we start digging a little deeper, that's usually where the most interesting conversations happen.

The businesses I enjoy working with most are rarely driven by profit alone. More often than not, they're built around a personal experience, a passion, a frustration or a desire to make something better. Sometimes it's a product someone wished had existed years ago. Sometimes it's a service created because they saw a gap in the market. Sometimes it's simply a determination to do things differently.

Whatever the reason, that story becomes part of the business. It influences the way they work, the people they attract and the experience they create for their customers.

I think that's what people really connect with.

As consumers, we're surrounded by choice. We can buy similar products from dozens of places and hire businesses that offer almost identical services. The thing that often influences our decision isn't the product itself; it's the person behind it and the values they bring with them.

That's why I believe every business has a superpower.

Not in the superhero sense, but in the sense that there's something uniquely theirs that nobody else can replicate. It's often a combination of experience, personality, perspective and purpose. It's the thing that shapes how they approach their work and how they make people feel. The challenge is that most people are too close to it to see it.

What feels natural to you often feels remarkable to someone else. The way you solve problems, communicate ideas, care for your customers or bring creativity into your work may be completely ordinary from your perspective, but it's often the reason people choose to work with you.

This is one of the reasons branding is about so much more than a logo or a colour palette.

For me, branding starts with understanding the person behind the business. Before we think about visuals, we need to understand the story, the values and the motivation. Once those foundations are clear, creating a brand that feels authentic becomes much easier because you're no longer trying to create an identity. You're simply finding better ways to express the one that's already there.

When you understand your why, your messaging becomes clearer, your confidence grows, and you stop trying to sound like everyone else and start communicating in a way that feels natural and aligned with who you are.

So if you've never taken the time to think about it, I have a question for you - Why did you start your business? What is it that you bring to the world that nobody else can quite do in the same way?

You might just discover that's your superpower!
